A 30-year-old Covington man was killed early Saturday when his motorcycle was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle in a Tacoma neighborhood.

Darnell Chocklon had been riding his motorcycle without a helmet, Tacoma police reported. Officers spotted him driving in a reckless manner on Sixth Avenue early Saturday. Police tried to stop the motorcyclist but he fled at a high rate of speed.

About 10 minutes later, citizens reported the motorcyclist had been struck by a vehicle at the uncontrolled intersection of North Ninth Street and North Ainsworth Avenue just after 2 a.m., police reported. Investigators believe Chocklon was southbound on Ainsworth and the other vehicle was northbound on North 9th at the time.

The vehicle fled, police reported. Chocklon died at the scene.

The Tacoma Police Department’s accident investigation team was called out to investigate the deadly crash.

Investigators have not yet located the fleeing driver. Witnesses have reported the fleeing vehicle was white. It might be a Jeep or similar-style vehicle, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. The vehicle likely has damage to the front passenger side.

Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest and charges filed in the case. Tipsters remain anonymous.

Reach Crime Stoppers at 253-591-5959.
