UPDATE: All lanes of State Route 7 have reopened as of 2:40 p.m, according to the State Patrol.

INITIAL POST: A woman was critically injured this afternoon when she apparently suffered a medical emergency and crashed into a tree on Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Spanaway.

Paramedics have transported the woman, described as in her mid 50s, to Tacoma General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, Washington State Patrol spokesman J.J. Gundermann said.

The crash occurred around noon. One lane of southbound state Route 7 (also known as Pacific Avenue South) remains blocked at South 176th Street.

Troopers suspect the woman suffered a medical emergency while driving on 180th Street. Witnesses reported that the woman’s car accelerated through a stop sign and struck the center concrete median, Gundermann said.

The car rotated into the southbound lanes of SR 7. It went southbound and slowly drifted to the right. The car went through a ditch, under a chain-link fence and onto base property. The car struck a tree, Gundermann said.

The woman was the only person in the car. No one else was injured.
