A 21-year-old Tacoma man apparently drowned Thursday night in American Lake, the Lakewood Fire Department reported.

Firefighters were called to the popular lake about 8:30 p.m. for a missing swimmer. A group had been boating on the water since late afternoon and called 911 when Zachery Berry didn’t return to shore, the Fire Department reported.

Berry had jumped from the boat in the afternoon to swim the 100 feet to shore. He was then going to return to the boat but never did.

“When he did not return, his friends started their own search,” the Fire Department reported.

Lakewood police and fire divers located Berry’s body about 9:30 p.m. in 12 feet of water.

    Zach Berry was actually 21.

  4. curtis57: Thanks for the information. I checked back with the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office after seeing your comment. They had the wrong year for when Zach was born. I’ve corrected the blog post.

I was out there from 4pm to 9pm and did not see one police boat on the lake. Why wern’t the police patroling the lake yesterday???? It was bt far the busiest day so far this year. Whenever there are no police boats out there the people start to act crazy!! alot of ametuer boaters on the lake these days. Not saying this was the cause of the drowning, but if the police were present , traffic on the lake would have been way more under control. Lakewood could have made a good 20k in infractions easy yesterday. Please everyone boat safeley and take a boating course. It sureley couldn’t hurt.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Zach’s family. It was shocking news for us to hear Zach had drowned. My son and Zach were close friends at Concordia and he would like to contact the family if anyone can supply a current phone number. Do they still live in the house off of Spanaway Loop Rd?

Zach was one of my best friends! He was a magnificent person that touched everyone who crossed his path. Condolences to his family, as all of us friends that were close to him are keeping each other strong! God bless your soul baby boy. Rest In Peace!! You will always be in our hearts!!
