Residents from more than two dozen neighborhood, youth and business groups will stand up to crime during a march Friday evening.

The semiannual “March Against Crime” kicks off with a rally at 5 p.m. at 64th Street and Pacific Avenue. Participants from 28 Safe Streets groups will then walk along Pacific Avenue and demonstrate on street corners primarily in the South End and East Side.

Several Tacoma police officials and local politicians are expected to be at the rally. Participants are invited to a spaghetti dinner fundraiser after the march. The dinner is from 7 to 8:45 p.m. at Gloria’s Bar & Grill, 8201 Pacific Ave. Donations of $8 per person or $14 per couple are suggested.

The proceeds will be donated to the Larchmont Safe Streets campaign to provide self-defense training to Tacoma youngsters.

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that “Safe Streets” participant streets tend to be the least safe in the city?

  2. Pamela Van Cleave says:

I bought a beautiful old craftsman home in hilltop about 10 years ago, thinking the neighborhood was improving. It was for awhile – new construction of homes and a medical clinic and neighbors were all very nice. However, in the past year we have a parade of drug users and sellers going through the alley behind our home at all hours of the day and night. We are surprised because we are midway between St. Joseph’s and Multicare Hospitals with millions of dollars invested.
