A fire caused extensive smoke damage this morning at Indulge Cupcakes in Sumner, East Pierce Fire and Rescue reports.

Smoke was spotted coming from the small house where the business is located abut 7 a.m. by an employee at the McDonald’s Restaurant across the street, according to East Pierce Deputy Fire Chief McDonald.

The shop was closed and firefighters broke into the front and rear doors as well as into the basement and found a fire in the kitchen area, McDonald said. Flames burned part of the first floor and basement.

One of the owners of the business who came to the scene was overcome by the stress of the fire and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, McDonald said. Her condition wasn’t  available.

A firefighters also was taken to the hospital for a medical issue not directly related to the fire, he said.

Investigators are at the scene trying to determine the cause of the fire which apparently started in the kitchen area, McDonald said.

The business had been closed since 8 p.m. Thursday night.
