Residents in south Pierce County are invited to a community meeting Tuesday night after a sharp increase in burglaries.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Baydo Chevrolet, 9201 350th St. S., in McKenna. Representatives of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office have been invited to address public safety concerns of community members, according to a press release. Pierce County Councilman Dick Muri will moderate the town hall.

Two longtime members of the rural community organized the event after seeing an increase in burglaries. Lynn Brewer reported that 26 percentĀ  of the homes on her street had been burgled during a three-month period.

“In an area where there is a relatively high use of methamphetamine and less law enforcement resources available, rural Pierce County is particularly vulnerable to being victimized,” Brewer said in the press release.
