Pierce County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 26-year-old woman Wednesday evening after she allegedly tried to grab a 5-month-old girl from her stroller.

The woman, who has a history of mental health issues, was booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of second-degree kidnapping.

The incident occurred about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said. A woman was walking her baby girl in a stroller in the 6000 block of Vickery Avenue East. The baby was strapped into the stroller.

The suspect, who was not known to the mother, suddenly stopped and got out of her car. She was yelling at the mother that the baby wasn’t hers, Troyer said. The suspect tried to pull the baby out of the stroller but wasn’t successful.

The suspect got back into her car and drove off. A witness followed the car, Troyer said. Deputies responded to a home and took the suspect into custody without incident.

The mother and baby were OK.
