Two injured in gunfight near college campus in Parkland

Two men were seriously wounded Wednesday night when they exchanged gunfire inside and outside a Parkland home near the campus of Pacific Lutheran University.

Both men were hospitalized for treatment of their gunshot wounds. Each is expected to survive, Pierce County sheriff’s detective Sgt. Jerry Bates said this morning.

At least one round from the gunfight hit a dorm room at PLU’s South Hall. No one was inside the room at the time. Detectives were investigating whether another round struck the outside of the building, Bates said.

Deputies received reports of a shooting at a home in the 200 block of 126th Street South just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, deputies discovered blood inside the home. By that time, however, both men involved had fled, Bates said.

At the home, deputies interviewed a 16-year-old Lakewood girl. She said she had her 27-year-old boyfriend drop her off at the home earlier in the night. The girl’s aunt lives at the home, Bates said.

The boyfriend wasn’t happy about dropping off the teen and returned less than an hour later. He found the teen and a 39-year-old man in a room of the aunt’s house, Bates said. The 39-year-old man is a roommate of the aunt’s.

The boyfriend allegedly started shooting at the roommate. (The police reports don’t say anything about a confrontation before the shooting began.) The roommate pulled out a gun and returned fire.

The teen told deputies she covered her face and heard the roommate say he’d been hit. The girl reported that she heard more gunshots outside, Bates said.

Neither the girlfriend, nor her 46-year-old aunt nor the aunt’s four children, all of whom were in the house at the time, were injured.

The boyfriend went to a home in the 500 block of 127th Street South and reported he’d been shot. The occupants  brought him into the living room and called for medical aid, Bates said. Paramedics took the boyfriend to Madigan Army Medical Center for treatment.

The roommate walked into St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood. He was later transported by ambulance to Harborview Medical Center. His injuries were initially considered life threatening but he’s now expected to survive, Bates said.

Detectives continue to investigate the shooting and the circumstances that led up to it.

  1. Taxpayers. Yep, I’m convinced they are all gainfully employed and pay taxes.

THey both have those guns legally as well.

  3. A 16-year-old girl having a 27-year-old boyfriend? What’s wrong with this picture?

  4. 27 to 39 year olds are not supposed to have 16 years old girl/ or boy friends! I believe there are laws about that.

typical drug house we know it well in th area need to be closed down

  6. Parents and legal guardians are legally responsible for what minors under 18 do under their care.

  7. DRED_SCOTT says:

It is perfectly legal for a 16 year old to have sex with any older aged person as long as there is consent and no coercion (such as money, alcohol, drugs, or a power relationship such as teacher, coach or pastor). This was solved the way the NRA wants it to be solved. With gun violence. If someone is messing with your woman and they have a gun, start shooting. It’s the American Way. Always has been–always will be as long as the baggers/NRA members keep the pressure on Congress.

What’s funny, is the fastest way to turn a conservative NRA member around is to have some nut shoot him in the head (James Brady).

  8. Too bad their aim was bad and they didn’t kill each other.

  9. APimpNamedSlickback says:

Technically, yes and no. An adult having consensual sex with a 16 y/o in WA may not be classified as rape or sexual misconduct, but it does still fall under the definition of sexual exploitation of a child.

My comment was removed…I guess the bookburners are out today.

Dred-Scott, Brady is not running the show….his wife is behind the Anti-Gun movement and he just nods his head like a good little mushroom.

You don’t know that…..if they are involved in the drug trade, that is strictly illegal. I hope they fall under the bus for “Extra Time for Armed Crime”

They both need to get women (not girls) their own age, And she needs to get a boyfriend that’s a little younger. Having boyfriends that old is just asking for a fight she way more than likely won’t be able to handle.

  14. DeschutesMan says:

She (the sixteen year old) is more than likely more mature than the two older men! DRED_SCOTT, you are either a lawyer or just a jerk or both!

  15. corvairdude says:

these poor people. victims of a broken nation. if we banned guns theyd be alive and yet possibly fight eachother then could be treated by our new healthcare system. vote for health car viva obama!

  16. “…she needs to get a boyfriend that’s a little younger”

She needs to get fixed. Otherwise we will have another generation of the same. Look at her, living with her aunt. No mother or father?

It’s not the guns or the drugs, it’s the lack of a family unit.

  17. This hasn’t been the first shooting in the area. When did that shooting at the climbing rock happen?

  18. interWOLFone says:

What kind of a loser of a 27 year old guy has a 16 year old girlfriend?

  19. interWOLFone says:

    Re: haraldh

Who said anything about the girl living with her aunt? The article states that the girl asked her boyfriend to drop her off at her aunt’s house. Not HER house.

I’d say that at the very least, the aunt ought to reconsider who she allows to live in her house. It appears that her roommate may have been up to a bit of slap and tickle with her niece…and possibly was tampering with her own 4 children as well.

  20. interWOLFone says:

    Re” Dred Scott

The age of consent in this state is 16. But the 16 year old’s sexual partner may only be 4 years older, or else it constitutes statutory rape.

  21. interWOLFone says:

    Re: corvairdude

An outright ban on handguns wouldn’t stop criminals from obtaining and using them.

  22. reaper14all says:

If indeed this was a drug house then the state should throw them out sell the house and pocket the money and if rented then they should be evicted after serving their time in prison. Same for the man who dropped her off, he should also lose his house or be evicted from his appartment. It shows how a unsupervised child can e taken advantage of by scum of the world. B oth men should be neutered so they won’t pass on stupid genes.

  23. DRED_SCOTT, guns are not poop, bad people are poop.Leave guns alone, they are one of the reasons why this country is free today.

  24. KhmerHeartSandra says:

In my opinion, in most cases it is wrong for the law to hold legal guardians responsible for teenager’s actions.
This 16yrs old girl is a good example for that. I am sure no parents in the right mind want their children to do bad of any kinds. Most parents working very hard to race and support these children and I’m sure none of them are wishing for this kind of reward of their hard working days……
