UPDATED: Man pleads guilty in deadly Fife crash

A man accused in a hit-and-run crash earlier this year in Fife that killed a 3-month-old boy has pleaded guilty.

Matthew R. Hamilton, 26, pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and failure to remain at the scene of an injury accident resulting in death this morning, News Tribune courts reporter Adam Lynn reports. He’s scheduled to be sentenced March 30 at 3 p.m. and faces seven years, three months to nine years, eight months in prison.

Prosecutors alleged Hamilton was driving east on 20th Street East about 10 p.m. Jan. 24. He went through a red light at 70th Avenue East and hit a car carrying Jayden Wayman’s father’s car.

Jayden was strapped into a car seat on the side of that was hit. The baby was taken to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and Health Center in Tacoma, where he died two days later.

Fife police and prosecutors alleged Hamilton left the scene. He was later arrested at a Fife apartment complex.

Hamilton had convictions in Whatcom and Grant counties, including a DUI conviction last November, and was driving with a suspended license.

Jayden’s parents attended this morning’s hearing. Hamilton is being held without bail in the Pierce County Jail pending sentencing.
