The child’s body washed ashore on the beach of Fox Island has been identified as the missing 8-year-old boy from Silverdale, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

“It ended the way we didn’t want it to end, but we’re 99 percent sure it’s him,” Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said. “He has the mohawk. He has the clothing. There’s nothing to lead us to believe it’s not him.”

The boy’s father was on the scene and fell to his knees and began to cry when he approached the site where the body was found.

The body has been collected and is on a Tacoma Fire Department boat on its way to the mainland, where it will be taken to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.

Investigators also have been looking at surveillance pictures of the 8-year-old boy taken shortly before he went missing Saturday.

The body was found in the 1000 to 1100 block of Paiute Trail, on the southern edge of Fox Island. Investigators initially said the body is that of a boy, approximately 9 to 10 years old.

Pierce County sheriff’s detectives and the Medical Examiner’s Office are being dispatched to the scene.

Kat Smiley and her son, Azriel Carver, have  been missing since Saturday. Her van was found on the shore in the Boston Harbor area of Thurston County. It is separated from Fox Island in Puget Sound by two islands, Anderson and McNeil.

OLDER POSTS: The body was found by someone walking on the beach during an extreme low tide, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Officials have not yet made identification.

Deputies were searching the beach but have found no one else.

UPDATE 3: From the AP story

Thurston County officials say it could be a boy missing since Saturday night.Lt. Chris Mealy of the Thurston County Sheriff’s office says he got a call from Pierce County officials on Thursday afternoon to say they are responding to a report that a child washed up on the island southwest of Tacoma. Fox Island is about 12 miles north of the beach where 8-year-old Azriel Carver and his mother, 29-year-old Shantina “Kat” Smiley, apparently abandoned a van Saturday. Mealy says its entirely possible the body is Carver.”

UPDATE 4: A law enforcement aircraft is over the area, searching for any sign of Smiley or anyone else, Troyer said.

  1. “It’s not known whether the body of could be that of Azriel Carver” ???
Well, does the body sport of Mohawk??? How difficult is it to identify a Mohawk, anyway??

  2. snarlingwolf says:

Hmm. more needed to sleuth this out , the evidence is unclear but plausible.

  3. cclngthr says:

They won’t give out such information until they contact Azriel’s dad, and the boyfriend of Smiley to question them further and see if they can confirm it.

Having a Mohawk is not conclusive enough for positive ID. Even then, the family has to be included to make such positive ID.

    That is soo sad……

  5. Did they get into a car accident? How did the body end up in the sound? This whole story is sad and confusing.

  6. reader1968 says:

I think the van got stuck, she went around to the back to get their stuff out, lost her footing, got swept away. One report said the currents are strong when the tides are changing. The son, bless his heart, tried to help her and got swept away too. So, so sad.

  7. I don”t get it. I get lost all the time. I never drove into Puget Sound. Either she was totally wasted or it was foul play. sad story

  8. Ryver_MystDragon says:

According to some reports the boy told someone his Mother fell and hit her head and injured her knee. That may explain her erratic behavior
