The 53-year-old Tacoma man accused of killing his wife, then setting their South Tacoma home on fire earlier this year made his first court appearance.
Michael Carlson was released from Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and booked into Pierce County Jail on Friday afternoon, according to online court and jail records. Pierce County prosecutors charged Carlson with first-degree murder and first-degree arson in connection with the Jan. 3 death of his wife, 46-year-old Laura Carlson.
During Michael Carlson’s arraignment this afternoon, he pleaded not guilty to both charges. A judge ordered him held in jail in lieu of $1.5 million bail.
Firefighters responded to the couple’s house in the 7200 block of South Lawrence Street shortly after 3 a.m. Jan. 3. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion and seeing flames engulf a trailer parked next to the home.
Fire crews found Laura Carlson dead inside the home. She’d been shot multiple times.
Firefighters pulled Michael Carlson from the bedroom. He was seriously burned in the fire and taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.
