UPDATED: University Place bank robbed at gunpoint, suspect in custody

UPDATE as of 10:53 a.m.: Investigators believe they have the bank robber in custody. A patrol deputy spotted the suspected bandit and stopped his car, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Deputies have found a gun and mask in the vehicle.

Investigators believe the man might be responsible for other bank robberies in the area.

UPDATE as 2:56 p.m.: The suspect is being booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of 10 counts of bank robbery. Investigators believe he’s responsible for a string of bank robbers in University Place and Lakewood dating back to October. In those robberies, the bandit either wore a Halloween-style hockey mask or a bag with eye holes over his head.

Deputies are responding to a bank robbery this morning in University Place.

The man wore a mask and showed a handgun during the robbery at the Key Bank, 4001 Bridgeport Way W., Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The robbery was reported at 9:45 a.m.

The bandit is described as a white man in his mid-20s. He was dressed in red and wore a gray hooded sweatshirt and a mask.

He was last seen going south on foot, Troyer said.
