Members of Associated Ministries will perform a brief ceremony this evening at a day care center near Frederickson where a man accused of gunning down a Tacoma teacher died.
The Moment of Blessing ceremony at Discovery Station Child Care, 16001 56th Ave. Court E., begins at 6 p.m. The site will be marked with bamboo poles laced with red and purple ribbons bearing the names of those killed in deadly violence in Pierce County.
Associated Ministries performed a Moment of Blessing on Monday for Jennifer Paulson, the 30-year-old special education teacher who was killed outside of Birney Elementary School last Friday. She had been stalked for years by the accused gunman, Jed R. Waits.
Waits, 30, fled the scene. A Pierce County sheriff’s deputy spotted Waits’ car on Canyon Road East and tried to pull him over. Waits eventually stopped in the parking lot of the day care center.
As he got out of his car, he wielded a gun. Waits and the deputy fired their weapons. Waits died of a gunshot wound to the head.
Pierce County sheriff’s detectives are investigating whether the fatal shot was fired by Waits or the deputy. As of this morning, the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office still had not ruled on Waits’ manner of death. (Manner of death is typically homicide, suicide, accidental or natural.)
