Tacoma school officials have decided to keep Birney Elementary School closed until Wednesday after one of its teachers was killed Friday.

Initially, the school was scheduled to reopen Tuesday. However, officials have since decided to keep the building closed so students, families and staff members can attend the memorial service for Jennifer Paulson.

Paulson, a beloved 30-year-old special education teacher, was gunned down outside the school on her way to work Friday morning. The gunman, who’d been stalking her for years, was fatally shot during a confrontation about 20 minutes later with a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy.

Paulson’s memorial service is scheduled to begin at noon Tuesday at Life Center church, 1717 S. Union Ave.

  1. While Chile reels from aftershocks,
    a seismic shock of grief
    rocks our community.
    Not an earthquake,
    it’s a heart quake.

    A teacher, a daughter, a classmate,
a colleague, a sister (in Christ)
    was gunned down (senselessly).

    Our hearts break.
Hands that hold our open Bibles shake.
It is a quake we can’t ignore,
    a chilling nightmare.

A father’s dreams for his little girl
have become a mountain of debris.
A mother’s hopes for her beautiful daughter
    have crumbled into rubble.

    A tsunami has been triggered.
A tsunami of tears, fears, outrage and prayer.
    A tsunami of God’s grace
breaking in on a broken community
    flooding it with powerful waves
of comfort, peace, forgiveness and healing.

  2. That was an amazing poem. Thank you Pastor Asimakoupoulos
