The accident happened at 5:50 p.m. at milepost 116. Traffic is proceeding in the right lane. The current backup is about 8 miles.

Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said the school was locked down because of its proximity to Timberland Bank, 2419 224th St. E. The bank was robbed this morning. The bandit presented a note and threatened to detonate an explosive, Troyer said.
The robber has not been arrested.

The suspected bank robber who was shot by three Tacoma police officers during a confrontation earlier this month was charged Wednesday in the heist.
Pierce County prosecutors charged Sean S. Sawyer, 43, with one count of first-degree robbery. Sawyer, who’d ben injured in the shooting, was released from the hospital and booked into Pierce COunty Jail on Tuesday night. He was expected to be arraigned on the charge Wednesday afternoon.
The bank robbery and officer-involved shooting were seven minutes apart the morning of March 15.

A minivan rear-ended a Pierce Transit bus this morning near South 11th and Mildred streets.
The crash occurred just before 7:20 a.m., police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. The minivan driver was injured.
Traffic officers responded to the scene and launched an investigation. The roadway is blocked for the investigation.

Due to the threat of more severe winter weather in the Cascade mountain range, the Department of Transportation officials extended the deadline today.
Drivers must remove their studded tires by 12:01 a.m., Sunday April 11.
Washington State Patrol troopers will give $124 fine to motorists who use
studded tires after the deadline. WSDOT encourages drivers, especially those heading into the higher elevations, to plan ahead and drive for conditions.
