ALL CLEAR: southbound I-5 near Mounts Road

A jack-knifed semi-truck is blocking the three left lanes of southbound Interstate 5 near Mounts Road.

The accident happened at 5:50 p.m. at milepost 116. Traffic is proceeding in the right lane. The current backup is about 8 miles.

WSP and WSDOT Incident Response are on scene. Tow is en route.

6:40 UPDATE: All lanes are now clear. The current backup is about 9 miles, to Bridgeport Way.

UPDATED: Lockdown over at elementary school in Bethel district

UPDATE: The lockdown has been lifted and students are being released.

Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said the school was locked down because of its proximity to Timberland Bank, 2419 224th St. E. The bank was robbed this morning. The bandit presented a note and threatened to detonate an explosive, Troyer said.

The robber has not been arrested.

UPDATED: Prosecutors charge suspected bank robber who was shot by TPD

The suspected bank robber who was shot by three Tacoma police officers during a confrontation earlier this month was charged Wednesday in the heist.

Pierce County prosecutors charged Sean S. Sawyer, 43, with one count of first-degree robbery. Sawyer, who’d ben injured in the shooting, was released from the hospital and booked into Pierce COunty Jail on Tuesday night. He was expected to be arraigned on the charge Wednesday afternoon.

The bank robbery and officer-involved shooting were seven minutes apart the morning of March 15.

Minivan crashes into Pierce Transit bus, street blocked for investigation

A minivan rear-ended a Pierce Transit bus this morning near South 11th and Mildred streets.

The crash occurred just before 7:20 a.m., police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. The minivan driver was injured.

Traffic officers responded to the scene and launched an investigation. The roadway is blocked for the investigation.

UPDATED with PHOTOS: Four more charged in deadly South Tacoma shooting

Pierce County prosecutors have charged four men with second-degree murder in connection with last week’s deadly shooting in a South Tacoma alley.

Warrants have been issued for the arrests of Byron E. Alvarez, 32; Richard C. Sanchez, 20; Santiago V. Mederos, 18; and Andres M. Mendez, 24.

Prosecutors charged the four Tuesday in the death of Saul Lucas-Alfonso last Thursday. Earlier in the week, prosecutors charged a 15-year-old boy with second-degree murder in the case.

Remove studded tires by April 11

Motorists in Washington will have through April 10 to remove their studded tires.

Due to the threat of more severe winter weather in the Cascade mountain range, the Department of Transportation officials extended the deadline today.

Drivers must remove their studded tires by 12:01 a.m., Sunday April 11.

Washington State Patrol troopers will give $124 fine to motorists who use
studded tires after the deadline. WSDOT encourages drivers, especially those heading into the higher elevations, to plan ahead and drive for conditions.

ALL CLEAR: southbound I-5 north of SR 516 near Kent

A roll-over collision is blocking the right lane on southbound Interstate 5 just north of State Route 516 near Kent.

The accident occurred at 4:25 p.m. Incident Response and WSP crews are on scene. The backup is currently four miles.

5:20 UPDATE: The backup is six miles.

5:30 UPDATE: The accident has been cleared from the roadway.

ALL CLEAR: eastbound SR 162 near Sumner

A semi truck-versus-car collision in the eastbound lane of State Route 162 near Sumner is blocking both directions of the roadway.

The crash happened at 4:25 p.m. at milepost 0.5. Washington State Patrol is on scene.

5:15 UPDATE: The crash is now blocking the westbound lane.

6:45 p.m. UPDATE: All lanes are blocked while crews remove the vehicles from the roadway.

8:00 FINAL UPDATE: All lanes are clear.
