The parking lot of a Fife elementary school was closed Monday afternoon after police discovered a man’s body in a car.

Police responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle outside Alice V. Hedden Elementary School, 11313 8th St. E. in Edgewood. Inside the car, they found a man with a gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted, Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said. The body could have been in the lot since the weekend, Troyer added.

The school did not go into lockdown and maintained regular activities, according to Fife deputy superintendent Jeff Short. School officials did close off the parking lot, so the students had to get picked up from the bus turnaround.
