The Tacoma police boat is currently aground in Commencement Bay.

The boat was making its regular rounds when it became stuck in the sand near Sitcum Waterway around 3:45 p.m., according to police spokesman Mark Fulghum. “It was just cruising along,” he said.

Officers are waiting for the tide to come in and lift the boat.

  1. I remain astonished that law enforcement agencies that regularly operate vessels do not require their operators to be licensed skippers. The current minimum requirements for their training, certification, and licensure is clearly insufficient, and the Washington State Safe Boater Card doesn’t hack it. If the embarrassment alone is not enough to spur these departments to adopting a stronger case for professional grade training, perhaps a sober look at the enormous risks of continuing to operate like this will cause City Council to make the adjustment for them.
