No one was injured Monday night when a Tacoma police cruiser – responding with lights and sirens to a call involving a knife – hit a minivan that turned in front of the officer, the police department reported.

The crash occurred shortly after 9:10 p.m. The officer was going eastbound on South 56th Street near South Cushman Avenue. The officer was headed to a call involving a knife and had the patrol car’s lights and sirens activated, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

The officer was passing cars in the center turn lane.

“Everyone was pulling to the right,” Fulghum said.

A woman driving a minivan turned left in front of the officer. The patrol car struck the back corner of the minivan.

Neither driver was injured. The minivan driver told officers she did not hear or see the patrol car. She was cited for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and failing to have valid proof of insurance, Fulghum said.

It is pretty hard to see a car with lights flashing and a siren blaring. (Rolls eyes)

  2. I see this portion of S 56th on a daily basis. There are many time that vehicles do not yield to emergancy vehicles. Also there are other who will follow them very closely to get ahead of other cars. It will only be time before a major wreck occurs at one of the intersections like S 56th and S M St.

  3. It seems like there is an accident on S 56th and Alaska, Cushman, Sheridan and M st every couple of weeks. I’m willing to bet money that at least 50% of those drivers involved don’t have valid insurance. Good thing I have uninsured motorist coverage.

Rant: These same drivers fail to pay any attention to right of way while flying down Cushman at 55th st. I’m temped to exercise my right of way, not stop and let them hit me.

Rant: We really need to have harsher penalties for not having insurance. Other states won’t let you renew your license or get tabs unless you have insurance. Everyone that skips out on insurance probably just gets insurance after they get the ticket, and flash their proof of insurance to the judge and presto, ticket is dropped. Then they cancel their insurance after they leave the courthouse.
