At PLU: Support for the community

Chrissy Core visited the Parkland Forza Coffee shop where four Lakewood police officers were killed last week. The makeshift memorial resonated with her.

“It moved me deeply just to see all the support – all the flowers, the stuffed animals, the signs, the letters,” said Core, a 24-year-old Pacific Lutheran University student. “It all just felt very touching, very heartfelt.”

Core, a Eugene, Ore., native, joined her husband, other students, members of the community and law-enforcement officers to watch the telecast of the four officers’ memorial service from a remote viewing site at PLU’s Olson Auditorium.

The Cores live in Shelton but say the deaths affected people far outside Lakewood.

“For us, this area is part of our community,” said Jordan Core, a 25-year-old University of Washington Tacoma student. “But Western Washington is a community. This affects all of us. But I’m amazed by the community as a whole.”

Jordan has long been interested in law enforcement; he previously applied for a job with the Washington State Patrol. He views it as an honorable way to serve the community.

When he learned PLU would erect a viewing site, he knew he couldn’t miss it.

“It’s sad here, and for good reason,” he said. “But I’d rather show my support than sit on the sidelines.”
