A water leak has created slick driving conditions on East Portland Avenue in Tacoma this morning.

Crews have shut down a northbound lane of Portland Avenue in the 3900 block because of the icy conditions.

A crew from Tacoma Water is on the scene and is trying to figure out what is causing the problem, the utility reported this morning.

“To fix the problem, Tacoma Water will need to open up the road surface to examine the pipes, which may close both northbound lanes on Pacific Avenue,” according to a press release.

Crews recommend drivers avoid Portland Avenue until the problem is fixed.

UPDATE: The leak has been fixed. Crews are now working to remove three inches of ice on the road. They are using de-ice machines, salt and graters on the street.

Crews hope to have the street reopened by this afternoon.

So what was determined to be the cause/source of the leak?
