Fife police, Puyallup Tribal officers and Tacoma firefighters are responding to a report of a body in the Puyallup River.
Officers and fire crews were headed to 51st Avenue East and Levee Road Northeast.
UPDATE No. 1: Swiftwater rescue teams are being called out to the scene.
UPDATE No. 2: The Central Pierce Fire & Rescue team has been called to investigated.
According to initial reports, there is something lodged against tree branches in the river. Investigators have not confirmed it’s a body, Tacoma fire spokesman Joe Meinecke said.
UPDATE No. 3: Investigators have confirmed there is a body in the river, Pierce County spokeswoman Sheri Badger said.
A dive team is currently working to remove the body.
The body was first spotted about 8:30 a.m. The body is located about 15 to 20 off the banks.
UPDATE No. 4: The body has been removed. Investigators have said it’s a man’s body, but they don’t know much more.
Police investigators are treating the river area as a crime scene. However, they don’t know if foul play was involved in the man’s death, Badger said.
Investigators have checked missing persons reports but found nothing matching the man found in the river.
It’s not yet known how long the body was in the water, how he died and who he is. That’s all under investigation.
