At least a half-dozen friends and relatives of Maurice Clemmons helped him flee the Parkland coffee shop where he killed four police officers, helped him clean up and treat a bullet wound and took him to a house in the Leschi neighborhood of Seattle.
Two of them were charged Tuesday for rendering criminal assistance based on a probable cause declaration. They are brothers, Eddie Lee Davis and Douglas Edward Davis, who live in a residence on 132nd Street South.
According to the declaration of Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist, the two were among six who helped Clemmons after the Sunday morning shootings. A third man, Rickey Hinton, was ordered held in jail, pending further investigation.
Here is how investigators piece together the events after the shooting Sunday morning:
After shooting the officers and struggling with one in the doorway of the coffee shop, Clemmons walked to a white pickup truck driven by a still unnamed man. The truck, parked at a car wash at 112th Street and Steele Street, drove away at a high rate of speed.
That truck was abandoned nearby and Clemmons later appeared on foot at a residence on 132nd Street South where Rickey Hinton lived. Clemmons had been at the house the night before and had borrowed the keys to the white pickup.
When he returned Sunday he told Hinton he had been shot and that the cops had shot him.
Clemmons woke up Eddie and Douglas Davis. Both told police later that Clemmons had told them he had “taken care of his business,” and both said they understood that to mean he had shot or killed police officers. The night before, Clemmons had showed two handguns to the men and said he was going to shoot police.
Hinton gave the keys to a white Pontiac to Eddie Davis and told him to get Clemmons out of there. While driving northbound, Clemmons gave Douglas a cell phone and asked him to make two phone calls. The three men arrived at a house in Algona-Pacific.
A female relative of Clemmons lives there and once inside Douglas Davis and the relative helped Clemmons clean a gunshot wound to his torso. Clemmons then changed clothes and put his other clothes into a bag.
From that house, Clemmons got into a car driven by the female relative.
Eddie and Douglas Davis got back into the Pontiac. Both cars were driven to the Auburn SuperMall.
At the SuperMall, the group met up with a third car driven by a female.
All three cars drove to another residence where Clemmons got into the female’s small white car and left.
Officers had received information that Clemmons was related to residents of a house in Seattle’s Leschi neighborhood. When they arrived, they saw a black man on foot near the house and a small white car leaving the area.
They stopped the car and spoke to the driver. She said she was a friend of Clemmons and admitted that she had met him in a parking lot, taken him to her residence. She purchased medical supplies to treat his gunshot wound, did a load of laundry and then drove him to the Leschi house. She said he told her he had killed a police officer or officers in the coffee shop.
The residents of the Leschi house said they had received a call from Clemmons asking if he could come to their house. They initially agreed but after speaking to relatives in Algona-Pacific, they fled the house and drove to a Seattle police precinct and reported the information.
So basically in this group of outstanding citizens, only two of them made a choice to do something to help resolve the situation peacefully, the rest did whatever they could to help a repeat felon continue committing crime. They should all be in jail indefinitely, if they are doing this then there is no doubt in my mind that they themselves commit crime on a regular basis – no apparent ability to discern right from wrong. Human waste taking up valuable resources.
Each of those who aided Clemmons have the blood of the fallen poice officers on their hands. They should be procecuted to the full extent of the law with no mercy given at their sentencing.
It get’s better. Eddie Davis was an accomplice of Clemmons when he assaulted officers in the past case…
I am absolutely repulsed that someone aided this murderer. Everyone who helped him should be treated just like they themselves pulled the trigger. Do people no longer have moral’s and values?
Yep, he’s innocent you fools.
The cops planted a gun on him & the real killer is still out there.
And God didn’t make little green apples.
Where the heck is the rock you liberals crawl out from under anyway?
He admitted killing a cop(s).
And his “buddies” helped him get away.
Who’s the judge that set bail at $20,000?
That’s 2 grand for a bunch of dope dealers…….think they’ll stick around to face the rap music?
Well, there’s another update. I see Judge CHUSHCOFF has raised the bail by a very substantial amount. Good man!
I’m a liberal and I don’t think he’s innocent. As a matter of FACT, it was a republican conservative who let this monster loose to prey upon us. His bail was set at 150K NOT twenty, but obviously too low. Nice try BMG. And I live in a house not under a rock. Just because huckabee let this creature loose, does that mean that I should hate ALL conservatives? HMMMMM?
Please arrest the driver of the getaway car and let him rot on the garbage heap of society, or next door to some bleeding heart.
Please don’t jump down my throat for this but, I can kind of understand why he was being helped. Sometime it’s hard to tell a family member no or let them suffer. But, Oh, this was NOT one of those times. If they felt bad about not helping him all they had to think about was 3 MURDERS on his hands. If I was his family member I would have not answered my phone or opened my door. That way you’re not exactly saying “I won’t help you” but he’ll get the gist. If this seems like a cop out, oh well.
Several had knowledge of his plans to kill police. That should have been reported at once. They are all the scum of the earth and should be treated to a court of law for the highest possible sentences.
Bigmeatgrinder thinks blaming “liberals’ is an intelligent statement to make. the reality is……….your use of this barbaric murderous crime as a sopabox to spout off your rhetoric is totally inappropriate and disgusting to say the least. try and show a little class…….save your poisonous venom for the real culprits.
Tell us the where all these fine friends of maurices live and we can thank them in person after they bail out … sound fun?
It is very clear that there is more human waste that needs to be removed from the gene pool !
But, it won’t be here in Washington State, where we Hug-Our-Thugs, and take them to The Fair !
But Wait, the fun has just started !
DOC has done early releases on a few thousand “Non-Violent”, like Maurice, inmates !
To Crusader: I am a black and liberal person and let me tell you, “I’M SNITCHIN.” Why? Because the judical system works better when those it’s trying to protect don’t hinder it. You’re right, PC has gone too far.
I think the point your perceived ‘liberal strawmen’ were trying to make was that in the great lands of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA you are innocent until proven guilty in a COURT OF LAW. I didn’t make that rule. Why do you think respectable journalists refer to these folks as ‘suspected’ or ‘accused’ when all likelihood it is ‘suspected’ or ‘accused’ who committed the crime? Because there is still integrity in this world god damn it!
people slapping their chests and screaming for blood need to sit down and shut up. Act like a civilized human being out of respect for our police men.
What is wrong with you maniacs?
Franktheliberal and sunup500, I believe our liberal media immediately went after Huckabee, without any research, on the commuting of this animal’s sentence. So the soapbox political slam starts with the liberal media. Does anyone think for a moment that Huckabee meant for this to happen. Let’s not get silly here and start fingerpointing between Dems and Repubs. on commuting sentences. Huckabee was advised by a parole board and followed their suggestion. In no way possible would he have ever allowed this to happen had he known the result. The liberal media are always the first to try and fingerpoint and blame someone.. Clemens should never have been released on bond in the first place from the Wa St. courts for his child rape and assualt 3 on an officer. The system failed those vicitms and will again in the future. We need to work together on getting this right!!!
God Bless the 4 officers he murdered and their families and fellow people in blue!!!
I am a police oficer, and as we were sitting around the office today, somebody suggested this as a thought to ponder! Please feel free and do so……There is but 1 person to blame for this, and that is Clemmons himself. Others are to blame for there action, he is responsible for his. But I ask all of you, do you take deductions from your taxes, do you take sick days from work when you are sick, do you take the buy one get one free offer at the store. ABSOLUTELY you do. Then we are ALL some what to bklame. You use the system to your advantage, and that is all Clemmons did. NOW LETS FIX THE SYSTEM. When the election ballots are mailed out, remember this event. When you check the judge that is liberal, remember this event. When you are asked to pay for another prison, remember this event. Because I tell you this, I WILL NEVER FORGET THIS EVENT!
Wasn’t blaming liberals for this maniacs actions…….was blaming them for making idiotic excuses for him. Don’t see anything here that’s changed my mind.
sunup, you make yourself seem sillier with every post you make.
Good luck with that.
Down with the Clown.
touche’ Meierhome!!!
bigmeatgrinder: rock on brother!!
$20,000 is the standard booking bail for an offense of this nature, the judge didn’t set that bail. The judge sets bail at the arraignment and then a defendant can ask for a bail reduction hearing then it’s up to the judge if he wants to lower a bail amount. The thing I don’t undestand is why they didn’t get a no bail warrant and then have the bail set in open court?
Oh sunup, you’re dating yourself……all I can say to that is “honk, honk”!
And as for my big red nose, Merry Christmas to you.
The cop killer is gone. My prayers are with the families of the victims.
The slimes that helped him are going away as well. What is your problem with that?
Fool.
LaReina206 – “I can kind of understand why he was being helped. Sometime it’s hard to tell a family member no or let them suffer.” Please write to the families, including the children, of the brutally slain officers and tell them that. Then, when that’s done, head to some ghetto part of a town, any town, and volunteer to give some random thug, or better yet a killer of cops, a ride to their chosen destination. And oh yes, don’t forget the cotton balls and duct tape.
Bigmeatgrinder,
He killed four people that I knew and respected and you are tossing politics into this conversation. While it would not have happened if your right wing idiot Gov. Huckabee had not let his butt out in the first place.
Liberal, Conservative what hell does it matter, they’re dead, never coming back because the entire system is broken. Why is the system broken because idiots worry more about liberal conservative than they do about getting the damn job done.
xcop, can’t disagree with one word you type.
Just one thing… He wasn’t my “right wing idiot”.
You don’t get the point either. I have a problem with the “folks” who are chastising the way this went down.
I would have shot the sob in the head in my front yard.
You don’t think I, or thousands of other folks like me don’t care?
I didn’t know any of them, but I’ve cried a thousand tears for them in the last three friggin days!
Sorry you are grieving, but politics has a LOT to do with this heinous mess, and if law inforcement would accept that fact, then maybe we could improve….
Maybe I misspoke. By law inforcement I was including prosecutors and such.
My bad. Us reguler folk tend to put you all in one big basket with a nice blue bow.
bigmeatgrinder….you didn’t misspeak…you made a typo….’us regular folk’ should be ‘us ignorant fools’……i’ve heard NO ONE make any excuses for him!
The people that helped him are like him…….
you must not know many people who have an IQ above 100 or else you just listen to what is spewed on the tv and by the spin doctors. Real, regular folks are upset and want the system to be corrected and are outraged by this whole horrific incident…..that includes BOTH liberals and conservatives. Sorry to tell you but YOU think like a lot of liberals i know!
This is just a horrific event. We all need to come together regardless of political party and stop arguing over what part did this! We are all Americans first of all and need to keep this in mind when we discuss how we can fix this. Sure there is a lot of anger right now, but we need to channel that into a collective voice of saying NO to this ever happening in our country again! God bless you fallen heroes and your families
Chuschcoff and Felnagle are are two of the best judges in the state. They both did a good job on the basis of what was brought before them. The blame for theis outrage rests solely on the perpetrator and those that chose to participate in his madness, especially those he told of his plans to kill police officers on Saturday night.
I agree with jensej.
I don’t think this should be a partisan focus. Indeed it IS a very politcal matter in that there are bad laws on the books that allow hardened criminals to walk free.
The widow of the Seattle policeman killed in October said it best, “The laws must change to ensure this never happens again” (paraphrased from memory).
I think that is something we can all agree on and should work toward in any way we can.
sT
What is this political BS?
If you want to blame someone other than Clemmons or the people who helped him, look at We the People. We have been the ones who want all the PC there is. We want to say all people can be rehabilitated, but when it doesn’t happen we want to blame the system.
During the past 60 years I have been watching us bend over backwards to be so PC our heads are dragging on the ground, so look at yourself and ask if you are part of the problem or want to be part of the solution.
I am so pis^^^ off right now, because I knew one of the officers that was killed and my heart is heavy. Bless all those families that were effected by this.
