The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund reports that Sunday's slaying of four Lakewood police officers is the fifth multiple-fatality shooting of law enforcement officers this year in the United States.

The previous incidents occurred in Oakland, Pittsburgh, Okaloose County, Florida; and Seminole County, OK.

"This latest incident ranks as among the deadliest days in U.S. law enforcement history," said Kevin P. Morison, senior director of communications for the organization.

The number of law enforcement officers killed by gunfire this year now stands at 44. That's up from 37 at this time last year.

The organization has a blog post here about the Lakewood officers.
