News Tribune reporter Scott Fontaine just talked to former Lakewood Police Chief Larry Saunders.┬áSaunders, who retired as Lakewood’s chief in 2008, is now a solider with I Corps at Fort Lewis.

Saunders was in Canada skiing this morning when he received several calls and e-mails.

“I’m shocked,” said Saunders in a telephone interview. “I’m horrified. I just can’t believe the news.”

On working with the ones killed: “I’m the old guy around there, and I kind of feel like they’re my sons and daughters.”

On the fallen: “They clearly are the very best Washington has to offer. I’m heartbroken over this.”
