Tacoma police have arrested a man suspected of robbing a sandwich shop at gunpoint Thursday night.

The Subway at 5236 South Tacoma Way was robbed about 7:40 p.m. The man had entered the restaurant wearing a black mask over his face and black hooded jacket. He robbed the employee at gunpoint and then fled, police reported.

Shortly after 10 p.m., Tacoma police officers spotted a vehicle make a sudden turn in the area of East 72nd Street and Golden Given Road East. Officers followed the vehicle and eventually activated the patrol car’s emergency lights.

The car didn’t stop. It went into an apartment complex, over a curb and onto a lawn, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

The driver fled through apartment buildings. An officer chased him, identified himself and ordered the man to the ground, Fulghum said. The driver was taken into custody without further incident.

The man matched the description of the Subway robber. The employee from the sandwich shop positively identified the man as the robber.

In the man’s car, officers spotted a magazine from a handgun, a narcotics smoking device and clothing similar to what the Subway robber wore, Fulghum said.

Officers booked the man into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of first-degree robbery and other charges.

If the man had a mask over his face and a hood on, can anyone tell me just how the clerk was able to positively identify him as the robber? Is it one of those times where the police show up with a guy and point to him and ask the clerk if it’s him? Sounds like it.
