Part of A Street in Tacoma will be temporarily closed starting today.
The crossing is often blocked by trains and is periodically flooded out.
The closure is between Puyallup Avenue and Dock Street. Pedestrians and other traffic will be directed to the D Street overpass, the City of Tacoma reported.
Eventually, the section of A Street will be permanently closed. Before that happens, city officials will host a public meeting to get input on the design. The meeting will be before the end of October.
All I have to say is thank you city of Tacoma. I work on the water near the A st. crossing and have to say that it is the most annoying thing to listen to those trains lay on their horns all day and all night. And people that live aboard their boats on the Foss Waterway will appreciate the noise reduction for sure. As I typed this I have heard two trains passing and blowing their horns.

Well it’s more about safety than the “horns” on a train. It was reported that BNSF wanted this crossing closed after they realigned the tracks on the curve to increase train speeds thru the area.
This “temporary” closure is going to be permanent. Why? BNSF had the crossing closure tied into the acquisition of the old NP/BNSF right of way that use to cross Pacific Avenue and goes up the hill behind UWT etc.
I hope when the closure is “permanent” that the same day that happens BNSF turns the ownership of right of way to the City so they can get the rails torn up, the cross streets (S. 21st) repaired so we don’t cross over rail crossing that needs to be removed. BNSF no dummies…they’ll turn over to the City and we, the taxpayer will get stuck with the bill removing the rails.
Too bad the people living on the boats in Foss Waterway have to listen to a train whistle multiple times of the day… but what do you expect with a major rail yards and main line that has been there longer than you have?
Personally, I don’t living on board boats in the Foss should be allowed.
