Law enforcement officials from across the state have gathered at this hour to say goodbye to a Lewis County sheriff’s deputy killed in the line of duty.

The memorial service for deputy Stephen “Mike” Gallagher, 34, began at 1 p.m. at St. Martin University in Lacey. The service was preceded by a 36-mile procession of police cars and other vehicles from Chehalis to Lacey, KIRO TV reported.

Gallagher was killed last week when his patrol car hit an elk on Highway 12 near Packwood. He was responding on his way to back up another deputy at a domestic violence call at the time of the collision.

KIRO has live video of the memorial service on its Web site.
