Here’s the release

TACOMA, WA – Central Pierce Fire & Rescue received an official notice earlier this week announcing that the Washington Sate Survey and Rating Bureau has lowered their insurance rating from a class 4 to a class 3. Fire departments are rated on a scale of #1 through #10 with #1 being the best. There are no #1’s in the state of Washington, and only three Fire departments rated as #2 Seattle, Bellevue and Federal Way. Here in Pierce County only the City of Tacoma and Central Pierce Fire & Rescue are listed as having a #3 rating by the Washington State Survey and rating Bureau.

What the #3 rating means is a lower insurance cost to most businesses that currently do not have a sprinkler system. There may also be some little savings to the average home owner, but the amount could vary depending on the insurance company. The new rating will take effect beginning July 1st of this year.

Fire Departments are rated on adequacy of water supplies, numbers of properly equipped fire engines and ladder trucks, placement of those fire engines, maintenance and condition of equipment, department staffing, hose size, age and condition, training of firefighters, response times to emergency calls, communication systems, proper records, number of fire stations, inspections, public education, building enforcement just to name a few.
