Updates on FWay shooting, fire investigation

New Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock gave brief updates yesterday afternoon on two on-going investigations by the department.

Regarding Sunday’s shooting at South 288th Street and Military Road, investigators believe the suspect fired his gun into a crowd in retaliation for an earlier altercation. (The 16-year-old suspect turned himself in Monday.)

Detectives do not believe the two victims were targeted. Detectives have found no indications that the shooting was gang-motivated.

Regarding last week’s house fire, Federal Way police continue to work with South King Fire investigators to determine what started the blaze.

The results from Saturday’s speeding emphasis in Pierce County

Law enforcement officers ticketed more than 600 drivers Saturday during a emphasis patrol in East Pierce County.

The speeding enforcement focused on Meridian East, Highway 7, Highway 512, 176th Street East and Sunrise Boulevard.

The aim was “getting drivers to slow down on roads where speeds in excess of 10 miles over the limit are common,” Pierce County officials reported.

In addition to the speeders, officers cited six drivers for either aggressive or negligent driving, 23 for not wearing a seatbelt, 88 for driving without proof of insurance and 21 for driving with a revoked or

Robbery victims begin testifying in Pierce County serial rape case

Editors’ note: This post originally contained the name of the 42-year-old witness who testified Tuesday. I’ve since taken his name out in an effort to protect the identity of his female roommate, who the newspaper has decided should be treated as the victim of a sex crime. We generally do not publish the names of sex-crime victims and try not to report specific details that could lead to people discovering who they are.

The victim of a Tacoma home-invasion robbery testified in Pierce County Superior Court on Tuesday about the day in October 2005 he was hog-tied and stomped on the head by a masked gunman.

"I thought my time was up," the 42-year-old man said during the trial of suspected serial rapist Anthony Casper Dias.

Pierce County prosecutors contend Dias was the intruder who attacked the man and his two roommates during an early-morning robbery at a condominium in the 6100 block of North 16th Street.

The man testified he never got a clear look at his attacker’s face and couldn’t say Dias was the gunman, but prosecutors say they have evidence that ties the 28-year-old Dias to the scene.

Dias is on trial in Pierce County for 20 crimes, including multiple counts of rape and robbery.

He faces another trial this summer in King County, where he’s charged with another 19 crimes.

Dias has pleaded not guilty to all counts.

Under the questioning of deputy prosecutor Lori Kooiman, the 42-year-old man testified for more than an hour about the Oct. 31 attack.

He told jurors about being awakened in his room about 4 a.m. by a man wearing dark clothing and a ski mask.

The intruder was hostile, glassy-eyed and smelled of marijuana, he said.

“I remember seeing a gun in his hand,” the witness testified.

Jeep crashes into Puyallup bank

A Tacoma woman plowed into the side of a Puyallup bank Monday night.

Her Jeep Liberty went through the northeastern most corner of Valley Bank at 1300 East Main Street at 7:12 p.m., Puyallup police spokeswoman Lorri Ericson said.

The vehicle went into the loan office area.

The 55-year-old woman suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a Tacoma hospital for treatment, Ericson said.

The incident left a hole in the side of the bank. A Puyallup police officer is standing guard until the bank can secure the building, Ericson said.

Police chase, suspect crash on East Side

I’ve gotten several e-mails about all the police activity Monday afternoon on the East Side.

Here’s a couple of excerpts of what you saw:

There was a police chase today that started in Pacific Ave and continued East on 72nd. I don’t know a lot of details but noticed the truck being chased by maybe 10 patrol cars spun across the street and crashed. The driver fled and police gave chase catching him in my neighbors back yard. I believe there were even a couple cars hit by this driver during the chase.

Fast food bandit in custody

Tacoma police have arrested a man accused of robbing several fast-food restaurants in Pierce and King counties since late December.

A warrant had been issued for Jack Hannah’s arrest on two counts of first-degree robbery after prosecutors charged the 35-year-old in two of the incidents earlier this month.

Hannah was arrested Monday night and booked into Pierce County Jail shortly before 6:30 p.m., Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said Tuesday,

Investigators have said they suspect Hannah robbed – at gunpoint – at least six fast-food restaurants in Tacoma, Puyallup, Lakewood and Federal Way since Dec. 27.
