Federal charges filed against Gilbert

Just filed a story for the homepage on federal charges being filed against Weldon Marc Gilbert, the wealthy pilot who’s been accused in a growing child sex abuse case.

He’s already been charged with nine sex crimes in Pierce County Superior Court.

Gilbert will make his initial appearance this afternoon – 2:30 p.m. specifically – in U.S. District Court in Tacoma.

I’ll update the blog when I see the federal charges.

UPDATE: Gilbert has been charged with one count of sexual exploitation of children-producing child pornography.

This appears to be based on the videotapes that have been confiscated from his home. Authorities say Gilbert made the tapes, which contain footage of him allegedly spanking and otherwise abusing several victims.

Gilbert’s defense attorney, John Henry Browne, scoffed at the charge.

“They are attempting to keep him in custody no matter what,” Browne said this morning. “I think that’s the game they are playing.”

A Pierce County judge ordered Gilbert held in lieu of $1.5 million on Friday. He’s made that bail but is now being held on the federal charge.

At today’s appearance, a hearing will be set to further argue Gilbert’s detention.
