I continue to make daily checks on McCabe’s American Music Cafe in light of the Tacoma Police Department’s requests for emergency suspensions of the downtown nightclub’s business and liquor licenses.
There was nothing new on either front late Wednesday afternoon.
In the meantime, I’ve fielded a call and gotten an e-mail from two readers who say the nightclub isn’t bad every night. There are no problems at McCabe’s when they play country music.
Tacoma police say the same thing. The problems are only centered on nights where “Top 40″ and hip hop music is played.
Here’s some of the e-mail I got from one McCabe’s patron.
I am at McCabe’s when the Country music is playing and I can tell you that it is a clean, fun, well hosted place. The crowd is largely over 40. They are laughing, sober and dancing.
Your article hints at the growing problem of drugs and gangs in Tacoma. I have occasion to drive by both “The Factory” (where the recent shooting incident came from) and “The Loft. Both feature rap and hard rock music and both are hot beds of drugs, prostitution and gangs.
The problems I have seen at McCabes are in the surrounding neighborhood, not inside. There has been little police activity on nights that I have been there but I have witnessed all sorts of crime on the surrounding streets.
Police activity at both The Loft and The Factory is consistant and obvious. A police car is parked near their doors during late hours. This presence is driving the gangs of street thugs whose activity in our town is on the rise, to seek new hangouts. McCabe’s parking lot has had little to no police protection unless they are called to handle an incident. I have never seen a police car present in their lot for the evening. It is past time for Tacoma to take a look at the growing problem of drugs and gangs in our neighborhoods…LA is no longer hospitable and they are moving north. We need to handle the real problem now or it will only get worse. Closing McCabe’s hurts inocent people who enjoy going there and doesn’t even put an effective band-aid over the real problem.
