McCabe’s and other problematic nightspots

We’re keeping an eye on McCabe’s today and whether any of the police department requests for emergency suspensions of the business and liquor licenses are approved.

In the meantime, I wanted to give you a little context. Around the newsroom, editors thought about the fate of Browne’s Star & Grill when they heard about the city’s possible actions against McCabe’s.

Browne’s was located at 1114 Martin Luther King Jr. Way on the Hilltop. Tacoma police said it was a magnet for drug dealers. The neighbors said it was pulling down the development of the strip.

The city bought the building in July 2005 as part of a larger plan to revive the Hilltop busines district. They closed a few months later.

Two years earlier, Browne’s was closed for 43 days after an in-depth code enforcement inspection found serious electrical problems. The owner had claimed his business was targeted because the police didn’t like his black customers.

TPD also was having some gang issues at Area 151 on South Tacoma Way. The owner closed the nightclub and was selling the busines.
