There will be two charity events involving local cops and firefighters this weekend.
On Saturday, Federal Way police officers will be looking for tips at the 2007 “Tip-A-Cop” event at Red Robin in Federal Way. The restaurant also will have a “jail and bail” opportunity for patrons interested in having their picture taken in a police car with a uniformed officer.
The event raises money for the Special Olympics Wahington. The event is from noon to 8 p.m.
Pierce County officers will be participating in the Tip A Cop fundraiser at the Red Robin on Steele Street from noon to 8 p.m. Officers will be in uniform and will assist waiters at the tables.
Seven firefighters from the Valley Regional Fire Authority and the Kent, Everett, DuPont, Rention and East Pierce fire departments will run in the sixth annual “Tunnel to Towers.” The 5K run/walk goes from the Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center site in New York City on Sunday.
The event is a tribute to New York firefighter Stephen Siller, who was on his way to a golf game when he saw the planes crash into the twin towers on Sept. 11, 2001. He turned his truck around but got stuck in traffic.
Siller got out of his vehicle, put on his firefighting gear and ran to the towers, where he later died.
The local firefighters raised $5,000 during last year’s run and hope to top that this year. The money goes to assist the children of firefighters killed on 9/1 as well as post-Katrina fire department rebuilding efforts. A portion of the money will stay in the state and go towards burn research and treatment.
To donate, go to any Washington Mutual branch and make checks payable to “Firefighters Do Good for Children NY” fund or contact the firefighters at email@example.com or at 206-963-5878.
