Spokane: Off-duty officer shoots suspected car thief

This news today out of Spokane.


SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — An off-duty Spokane police officer shot a man early Monday who had stolen his truck, police said.


The 20-year-old victim was taken to a hospital, where his injuries were not life-threatening and he was in stable condition, police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer DeRuwe said.


Officer James "Jay" Olsen, a 16-year veteran, was placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

Shooter in deadly 2003 home invasion pleads guilty

Lights & Sirens has learned that a man has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in a deadly home-invasion robbery that went unsolved for nearly three years.


Christopher Blackwell, 25, entered the plea in Pierce County Superior Court last week as jury selection was underway in his trial.


Deputy prosecutor Ed Murphy will recommend a sentence of 38 years, 4 months in prison for Blackwell, according to court documents.


Blackwell is one of five people charged in the June 2003 death of Joshua May, who was shot to death in what police believe was a robbery gone wrong.

Police respond in force to Area 151

Victoria Watkinson sent an e-mail this morning about police activity along South Tacoma Way in the early morning hours.


Hi its 1:10 AM and I live on South Tacoma way and 56th ave in Tacoma. I just heard and saw what I estimate to be nearly 10 police cars go by with sirens and lights blazing and going very fast. This is very unusual of course. I have no idea were they went for sure but they were heading West on S. Tacoma way in quite a rush. worth checking out. let me know if you find something out

Playing with fire In Auburn

Auburn-area firefighters will be conducting drills starting today at the Auburn Golf Course Clubhouse. The three-day drill is being conducted to fulfill a state-mandated training requirement.


Here’s a little more from the Valley Regional Fire Authority.


The clubhouse building, located at 29630 Green River Road SE, will be on fire and producing smoke from approximately 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., February 26 – 28. The clubhouse will be burned entirely on the last of the three days to make way for a new facility, scheduled to be completed by October.

Arrests made in homicide

Looks like there have been three arrests in one of last week’s homicides in Tacoma.


Two men were booked early, early Sunday on suspicion of first-degree murder. A woman, who has the same last name as one of the men, was booked Saturday evening.


The three are on the in-custody arraignment list for this afternoon.

Update on Friday’s court action

I posted this break down of anticipated court action today. Now we’ve got some updates.


- The man who allegedly led police on a chase, then tried to hid in a Fircrest hot tub is on the in-custody arraignment list for this afternoon. He faces a slew of charges after the overnight Wednesday-Thursday incident.


UPDATE: Daniel Thomas Stevens has been charged with six crimes related to the pursuit.


- Julio Cesar Pena Camacho, who’s legal name is Jose Antonio Estrada Leon, is on the calendar for a plea. He was convicted of strangling his pregnant

A busy Friday ahead in Pierce County courtland
