Homicides in 2006

I had a story on Sunday about the homicides in Tacoma and Pierce County last year.


Here’s a list of all those cases, broken down by law enfocement agency, and where they stand.


Tacoma Police Department

22 homicides; 21 solved

Jan. 5: Donald George-Oya, 18, was fatally shot while riding a bicycle along East 40th Street near East I Street. He was shot multiple times. Two suspects arrested and charged in the case, which appears gang related.


Feb. 8: Daniel Jacob Varo, 22; Darren S. Christian, 28; and Lindy A. Cochran, 21 were found fatally shot in Christian’s rental house in the 600 block of South Union Avenue. Robbery appeared to be the motive. Suspected gunman Ulysses Handy III has pleaded guilty and been sentenced in the deaths. Four others have been charged and were awaiting trial.


Feb. 19: Edward Ernest Drayton, 48, died of complications of a gunshot wound he sustained in 1988 on South 12th Street. Drayton was 31 at the time of the shooting. He died in King County.


Feb. 22: Beau Dee Pearson, 40, was fatally shot while meeting acquaintances in a travel trailer behind a house in the 4500 block of South L Street. A jury found Dustin Kelley guilty of murder in the death.


Feb. 22: Haydon Kostelecky, 2, died of his injuries. Prosecutors have charged Hayden’s stepfather, Leon Lee Reyes, with second-degree murder.


Feb. 24: Pepper L. Jones, 27, was killed in the bath tub of her home at in the 5600 block of South Thompson Ave. Prosecutors have charged her husband in her death.


March 25: Marvin L. Arnold Jr., 45, was fatally shot by two Tacoma police officers after Arnold came at them with a knife. He was repeatedly asked to drop the weapon. The shooting has been ruled justifiable.


April 3: Desaundra Dixon, 35, was fatally shot in the chest about 2 a.m. in her home in the 5600 block of South Junett Street. A jury convicted her longtime boyfriend Victor Martinez of second-degree murder.


April 6: Robert Luea, 21, was fatally shot when he got in between an argument between his mother and stepfather in their home in the 4100 block of South J Street. Prosecutors charged his stepfather, Louis T. Stanback Jr., with second-degree murder.


April 20: Dien Kien Huynh, 55, was beaten shortly after he got home from work. He was attacked and robbed in the front lawn of his home in the 3800 block of South 16th Street. Prosecutors charged three Mount Tahoma High students with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery in the homicide.


May 10: Police found the body of Robert J. Barrow, 49, inside his house in the 1200 block of South 72nd Street when they responded to a burglary alarm and found the front door open. Prosecutors have charged Shaunel Clarris Burt with first-degree murder, alleging she was working as a prostitute and went over to Barrow’s house for a date.


May 31: Morris Perry, 46, was fatally stabbed with a screwdriver in his home in the 500 block of South 68th Street. Prosecutors charged Steven Dwayne Anderson with first-degree murder.


July 4: Jason Outler, a 31-year-old single father, was fatally shot during an argument in the 3100 block of North Eighth Street. Prosecutors charged Faulolua Faagata Jr. in the case, alleging he argued with Outler over how much Outler was going to give Faagata for giving him a ride home.


July 8: Rhaczio Demetri Simms, 18, was fatally outside a downtown Tacoma nightclub in the 800 block of Pacific Avenue. A 17-year-old girl was hit by a stray bullet and paralyzed. Police believe the shooting was between two rival gangs. Prosecutors charged Verrick Yarbrough with first-degree murder and first-degree assault.


August 7: Jeffery Norris-Romine, 21, was fatally shot by a man who got out of another car and walked up to Norris-Romine in the 9000 block of South Alaska Street. Investigators arrested a suspect but prosecutors did not file murder charged against the man because he probably acted in self-defense.


Aug. 27: Velma Angeline Tirado-Salway, 45, was fatally shot in a downtown Tacoma alley. Officers discovered her body in Court D Street South near the 1900 block of South Fawcett Avenue. The case remains unsolved.


Sept. 3: Olga Carter, 39, was fatally shot during a domestic dispute with her boyfriend at their home in the 4500 block of South Sheridan Avenue. Prosecutors charged Carter’s boyfriend, 45-year-old Donnell Price, with first-degree murder.


Sept. 7: Julius Williams, 24, was found fatally shot on the sidewalk outside Bryant Montessori School, 717 S. Grant Ave. Williams was an AWOL Fort Lewis soldier. Prosecutors charged Irvin Dale Carter Jr. with first-degree murder, alleging he wanted a gun back that he’d loaned Williams.


Oct. 20: Robert Tapia, 18, was fatally shot while sitting in the passenger seat of his girlfriend’s car near the 3500 block of East K Street. An arrest warrant has been issued for Jesus Mederos, 20.


Dec. 11: Luis Bernal, 33, was shot multiple times in his apartment in the 4000 block of East McKinley Avenue. Prosecutors charged Abel Edurado Contreras and Anthony Nicholas Sakellis with murder, alleging they were upset over several thousands of dollars that Bernal owed.


Pierce County Sheriff’s Department

9 homicides; six cleared

March 22: Randall L. Ferguson’s body was found in the trunk of a car that had gone over an embankment in the 2600 block of Point Fosdick Drive Northwest. The 45-year-old Puyallup man been shot to death. Prosecutors have charged his wife, Angela Ferguson, with first-degree murder in his death.


April 6: A Pierce County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot Jeffery Raleigh, 52, after he picked up a bow and arrow from behind a bush, drew it and aimed at deputies. The shooting was ruled justifiable.


May 6: James Nicholas Stewart, 27, was fatally shot outside his apartment in the 12400 block of Military Road East just after 2 a.m. Shortly after he arrived at the apartment, an argument might have ensued and prompted someone to fire off five shots, with one killing Stewart. A composite sketch of the suspect has been released but no arrests have been made.


June 3: Trystan Titus, 3 months old, died from severe head injuries that he’d suffered May 26. Prosecutors have charged Brandon Trevino with Titus’ death.


June 20: Jamie Bunta, 19, was fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire with another car as they drove west on Highway 512. Investigators suspect his death might be tied to gang-related shootings in Tacoma. No arrest have been made.


June 21: Larry Alan Peterson, 54, was fatally shot by Pierce County deputies when he fired one round at them outside his home in the 12600 block of 134th Street Court East. The shooting was ruled justifiable homicide.


June 29: Pierce County sheriff’s deputies fatally shot Jack Sonntag, 25, after he shot and seriously injured Washington State Patrol trooper Kelly Kalmbach during a drunken driving traffic stop in Spanaway. The shooting has been ruled justifiable.


Oct. 29: Byron Jones, 29, was fatally shot in his apartment in the 11200 block of 18th Avenue South. Jones’ wife found him. No arrests have been made.


Nov. 5: Gary Pimentel, 26, was fatally stabbed in the neck while visiting a girl he met online at her Parkland apartment. Prosecutors have charged Raudel Sandoval-Chavez with second-degree murder.


Lakewood Police Department

7 homicides; 5 solved; 1 solved by suicide

Feb. 21: Gregory Scott Owen, 29, was fatally shot during an argument with friend. Prosecutors have charged Kristina Ranae Grier in the death.


May 11: Sherrika L. Wilson, 22, was fatally shot by her husband, Tyronido D. Wilson, 33, before he turned the gun on himself and committed suicide at their Seeley Lake apartment.


May 13: Jason S. Johnson, 25, and Timothy M. Jackson, 24, were fatally shot during an argument at an apartment building in the 5500 block of Chicago Avenue.

Prosecutors have charged Todd Dwayne Rogers with first-degree murder.


July 28: Tavarrus Moss, 24, was fatally shot and two others were injured after a heated dispute in a parking lot in the 6000 block of Mount Tacoma Drive. An argument had started inside a nearby bar and moved outside, where it turned physical. Prosecutors have charged Aquarius Tyree Walker in the case.


Sept. 5: Brian Lewis, 45, was badly beaten and later died after an altercation in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 4900 block of 109th Street Southwest. Prosecutors have charged Charles Andrew Bukovsky, John Caldwell Gordon, Anthony Maxwell Knoefler and Jesie Puapuaga with second-degree murder.


Dec. 2: Derrell Sanders, 27 of Tacoma, was fatally shot in the parking lot of Nights Inn, 9325 South Tacoma Way. No arrests have been made.


Puyallup Police Department

1 homicides; 1 solved

March 28: Daniel Bills, 25, was fatally shot as he sat in a car outside a house in the 400 block of 10th Avenue Southeast. Prosecutors charged Creede Raymond Harris with second-degree murder, alleging he and Bills had had tension in the past over their mutual affection for a woman.


Sumner Police Department

1 homicide; 1 cleared

Oct. 9: Patrick Luigi Piccolo, 25, was shot once in the neck and left dead for in the 2100 block of Cottage Road in Sumner. Prosecutors have charged Jason Stowe with first-degree murder in the case.
