We’ll be keeping tabs on the following action today in Pierce County Superior Court.
- Accused Tacoma Mall shooter Dominick Maldonado has a hearing this morning in front of Judge Linda Lee. We should learn what new “issues” have cropped up in the case.
Watchers of this case will remember that Maldonado was in court a little more than a week ago. His court-appointed attorney asked to reschedule the routine hearing because some issues had come up in the past week. He declined to elaborate to the judge or The News Tribune but said he should be able to talk in a week.
This should be the day.
- The murder trial for convicted killer Cecil Emile Davis is scheduled to begin soon. Lawyers will be in court to argue motions before Judge Kathryn Nelson this morning. In this case, Davis has been charged with second-degree murder in the 1996 slaying of Jane Hungerford-Trapp.
According to court documents, DNA tests on blood found on a pair of Davis’ boots matched the genetic makeup of Hungerford-Trapp. The 45-year-old mother was visiting a friend when she was killed and her body left on the landing of a staircase in the Hilltop.
In 1998, a jury convicted and sentenced Davis to death for the rape and murder of 65-year-old Yoshiko Couch in her East Side home on Jan. 25, 1997. The state Supreme Court overturned the death sentence because one of the jurors twice saw Davis wearing ankle cuffs. He is awaiting resentencing on that conviction.
