Tacoma will celebrate its newly named fire chief next week with a swearing-in ceremony.

The event is mostly ceremony. Chief Ron Stephens has been at the helm of the department for more than a year, when former Fire Chief Eileen Lewis retired in August 2005. City Manager Eric Anderson appointed Stephens, who had been the interim chief, to the top fire post last month after a nationwide search.

The event begins at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30. Seating starts at 3 p.m. on the fifth floor of the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center.

Refreshments will be served.
