Two Puget Sound-based retailers report August sales boosts

August was a good month for two of Puget Sound’s biggest retailers.

Nordstrom’s report of a 21 percent increase in same-store sales during August blew past analyst’s predictions of an 11 percent increase.

The high-end fashion retailer attributed at least part of the increase to the timing of its anniversary sale. Eight days of that sale fell during August this year compared with just one day in 2011.

Meanwhile, at Issaquah-based Costco, same store sales were up 7 percent. Part of the increase was due to higher gas prices, which were countered by lower exchange rates.

Liquor giant, wine specialist BevMo heading to Washington

Big liquor retailer BevMo is heading to Washington in the wake of a voters’ decision last fall to end the state’s monopoly on liquor sales.

The California-based liquor retailer is among dozens of retailers ranging from supermarkets such as Safeway and Top Food & Drug to drug stores such as Bartell to discount stores such as Costco, Walmart and Target, that have made plans to sell liquor when the state allows it June 1.

BevMo’s first two stores are scheduled to open in Tacoma and Silverdale in mid-summer, said BevMo chief executive, Alan Johnson.
