Chamber names winners of annual civic spirit awards

At a Friday luncheon, the Tacoma-Pierce Chamber presented its annual awards saluting local businesses and leaders.

This year’s winners were:

The Ghilarducci Award recognizing successful new development, renovation or beautification:
• Murray Morgan Bridge Rehabilitation

The Popham Award (named for the late Art Popham, a business columnist at The News Tribune) recognizing the individual that has done the most to build community spirit:
• Sue Schaeffer, Tacoma Waterfront Association

The Public Places Award recognizing the best activation of a public park, open space or right-of-way:
• Frost Park Chalk Off

IRS presents a free webinar for small businesses on Thursday

If you own, operate or plan to establish a small business, the Internal Revenue Service wants to help.

And it will help beginning Thursday, June 20, with a free, live webinar at 11 a.m..

This is, after all, National Small Business Week.

The title of Thursday’s webinar is “Avoiding the Top Tax Mistakes that Small Businesses Make.” Topics will include tops on common mistakes, good recordkeeping strategies, the definition of reportable income, how to choose a tax preparer and tax information resources. The live presentation will feature a question-and-answer period.

The event will be archived on the IRS video portal.

Another success from Spaceworks Tacoma: Grit City GrindHouse opens next week

A shop offering skateboards, longboards and custom art will celebrate its grand opening June 21.

Grit City GrindHouse will operate in the St. Helens neighborhood, just down the hill from Puget Sound Pizza on South 7th Street. The GrindHouse is the latest success from the Spaceworks Tacoma program, which matches artists with vacant commercial space to both enliven neighborhoods and incubate business.

SBA ombudsman visiting Seattle on Thursday, wants to hear views on enforcement and compliance

Owners of small businesses will have an opportunity to air their views on regulatory fairness at a forum June 6 sponsored by the Small Business Administration.

SBA Acting National Ombudsman Yolanda Swift will appear at the forum, at the Rainier Club, 820 4th Ave. in Seattle beginning at 8:30 a.m.
