Gas prices continue decline in South Sound

At a time of year when gas prices are usually rising, gas prices are falling in the South Sound.

According to The News Tribune’s Gas Deal Finder, the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular in the Tacoma area Wednesday was $3.65, almost five cents less than a week earlier.

That price is down about 18 cents a gallon from the average a month ago.

Gas prices fall nearly 8 cents in a week in South Sound

Average gas prices have fallen by nearly eight cents in a week in the South Sound.

A gallon of unleaded regular now costs $3.73 in the Tacoma area on average.  That’s down from $3.799 a week ago and some 13 cents off the 2013 high of $3.86 set more than two weeks ago according to The News Tribune’s Gas Deal Finder.

Port of Tacoma saw huge increase in container business last month

The Port of Tacoma’s principal business, container shipments, rose by nearly 50 percent in February this year, new statistics from the port show.

But not all of that business boom is likely to be repeated throughout the year, said port officials.

That’s because Asian manufacturers increased exports before the mid-February Lunar New Year holiday to compensate for plant shutdowns during the holiday celebrations. Shipments rose by 46.8 percent.

Gas prices falling in South Sound

Gas prices once again are falling in the South Sound after a nearly three-month run-up from lows just before Christmas.

According to The News Tribune’s Gas Deal Finder, average prices in the Tacoma area have dropped by more than four cents a gallon to $3.818.  That compares with $3.859 for a week earlier.

A month ago, prices were $3.726 a gallon. Before Christmas, prices bottomed out at below $3.30 a gallon.

Nationwide, the average price Tuesday was $3.666.

Gas prices hit a plateau in the South Sound

Gas prices, which have risen like the profile of Mount Rainier since Christmas,  hit a plateau in the South Sound this week.

The average price of a gallon of gas Friday hit $3.857 a gallon in the Tacoma area, less than a cent more than at the same time last week.

Nationwide, the average gas price fell by more than four cents a gallon during that same week to $3.679 a gallon.

Gas prices up nearly a dime a gallon in the last week

Gas prices, which have been rising steadily since late December,  showed no sign of halting their upward move this week in the South Sound.

Average prices in the Tacoma area were up nearly a dime a gallon in the last seven days according to The News Tribune’s Gas Deal Finder.

Those prices were $3.856 for a gallon of unleaded regular here Friday compared with $3.76 a week ago. A month earlier, the average price was $3.531.

Gas prices up nearly eight cents for the week

South Sound gas prices escalated by nearly eight cents in the last week, but some energy experts are predicting that prices may moderate soon.

In the Tacoma area Friday, the average price of a gallon of unleaded regular gas was $3.75 a gallon. That’s up 7.6 cents from Friday last week according to The News Tribune’s Gas Deal Finder.

Prices here have risen 38 cents a gallon since Jan. 22.  But that’s less than the 44.8 cents a gallon that gas prices have jumped nationwide.

South Sound gas prices escalating quickly

Just as surely as the day’s get longer this time of year, gas prices are once again rising in the South Sound.

At the current rate, prices could top $4 a gallon in April.

According to The News Tribune’s Gas Deal finder, the average price of a gallon of unleaded regular in the Tacoma area fit $3.671 Friday. That price is 6.3 cents more per gallon than a week ago. Average prices haven’t been that high since late October in the South Sound.
