South Sound gas prices, which last weekend appeared to have stabilized at about $3.75 a gallon, have moved lower as the Independence Day holiday approaches.

In the Tacoma area, according to The News Tribune’s Gas Deal Finder, the average price of a gallon of unleaded regular Wednesday was $3.70 a gallon, down about four cents from this time last week.

And the price of petrol declined below the $3.50 mark at least one station, the CFN station at Puyallup and Portland avenues where a gallon cost $3.49 Wednesday afternoon. The Safeway in Federal Way at 1207 S. 320th St. matched that price.

Two other Tacoma-area stations, Costco near the Tacoma Mall and the Arco station at South 56th and Orchard streets, were selling unleaded regular for $3.50.

In Thurston County, the least expensive gas was at two Arco stations, one at 7291 Martin Way East and the other at 10222 Martin Way East, where the price was $3.55.

The real bargain gas prices, as usual, were in the Southern states. South Carolina prices were $3.13 a gallon on average.

Alabama’s average price was $3.21 a gallon.  Mississippi’s average price was $3.24 a gallon.

The nation’s highest gas prices were in Hawaii, $4.29 a gallon.  California’s prices have finally dropped below $4 to $3.97 on average.
