A shop offering skateboards, longboards and custom art will celebrate its grand opening June 21.
Grit City GrindHouse will operate in the St. Helens neighborhood, just down the hill from Puget Sound Pizza on South 7th Street. The GrindHouse is the latest success from the Spaceworks Tacoma program, which matches artists with vacant commercial space to both enliven neighborhoods and incubate business.
The program began in the summer of 2010 and has worked with more than 100 artists or artist teams in 24 spaces around downtown Tacoma. I profiled some of the business success stories last year, including Poppy & Co., which operates its retail store on Broadway.
GrindHouse owners Taylor Woodruff and Robert Boyle will sell and service boards as well as create custom graphics for them. They also plan a clothing line.
The grand opening is Friday, June 21st, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the shop, 311 S. 7th St. Earlier in the day, the business will co-sponsor a “Sk8venger Hunt,” where riders in teams of 2 to 5 people will receive clues for a scavenger hunt starting at 10 a.m. Teams have until 5 p.m. to return to the shop with pictures of the solutions.
