Paladina Health, the DaVita subsidiary that opened its first primary care clinic in downtown Tacoma, opened its second location in Washington on Tuesday.

Located at 32275 32nd Ave. S. in Federal Way, near DaVita’s newest business offices, the clinic is also the 35th in a nationwide network of “employer-sponsored medical homes” — in other words, a way for businesses to provide healthcare coverage for employees without using an insurance company.

Paladina Health is a subsidiary of $9 billion health care services company DaVita HealthCare Partners, which is based in Denver. DaVita is a national leader in kidney care and dialysis, and in recent years has broadened its focus to include purchases of medical groups and doctor networks in California, Nevada, Florida and New Mexico.

DaVita’s business headquarters is in the South Puget Sound region, with offices in Tacoma and Federal Way.

Like the Tacoma clinic, the Federal Way clinic will be open not just to DaVita employees but also to both employer groups and to individuals who want to purchase a membership directly, according to a news release. The cost is $69 per adult and $39 per child.

Paladina Health has clinics in 12 states, with some operating under the name ModernMed.

The Tacoma clinic, at 1250 Pacific Ave., has been in operation since January 2012. In that time, Paladina reports that healthcare costs for clinic members decreased by 10 percent and that members with chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes saw marked improvement in disease control.
