The brief romance between $4-per-gallon prices and South Sound service stations appears to be over, at least for now.
The average price for a gallon of unleaded regular dropped to $3.92 a gallon Tuesday. A week earlier, that average price had been nearly $4.02 for a gallon.
South Sound prices had hit the $4 mark at mid-month and had lingered there for several days before moving abruptly lower over the weekend.
Prices are still considerably higher than they were a month ago when the average was $3.59 a gallon. But Tuesday prices nonetheless are way below the $4.27 a gallon residents were paying a year ago.
The News Tribune’s Gas Deal Finder reports that the lowest price in the South Sound, $3.59 a gallon, is posted at the CFN station at the corner of Portland and Puyallup avenues in Tacoma near I-5. That former Arco station has a reputation as a price leader.
In Olympia, the lowest price was $3.74 a gallon at the APP station at 1306 Fones Road SE. In Federal Way, the lowest price, $3.79 a gallon, was posted at a station at SW 312th Street and SW Dash Point Road.
Nationwide, lowest average prices were in South Carolina where the average is $3.19. The highest prices are in Hawaii, $4.31 a gallon. The lowest prices in the continental U.S. are in North Dakota, $4.11 a gallon.
