Boeing continued culling its Puget Sound workforce this summer, sending layoff notices Tuesday to 253 workers due to be laid off by mid-July.
This week’s layoff notices were the third set of workforce reductions Boeing has scheduled thus far in 2013. The company earlier this year issued layoff notices to 939 workers for layoffs effective June 7 and to 99 workers for layoffs effective June 21.
The company has said it is trimming its workforce of extra engineers, technical workers and others made redundant by cutbacks in work on the 787 and 747-8 airliners.
Boeing had hired hundreds of workers to move design and production of those planes forward. Both new aircraft suffered major delays because of design and production issues. Now, production is finally stabilizing, and Boeing says it needs to trim back its employee ranks to cut costs.
The company has said it may lay off or eliminate jobs for up to 1,700 engineers in the Puget Sound area this year.
Not all those receiving layoff notices will be terminated. Some may retire or find other jobs within the company, company officials say.
Between the end of January and the end of April, Boeing’s Washington workforce has dropped by 909 workers. At the end of April, the company employed 85,488 workers in the Evergreen State.
The cutbacks have also affected South Carolina, where Boeing also builds 787s. The workforce there has fallen 215 workers between the end of February and the end of April. Boeing employed 6,549 workers in South Carolina at the end of April, the last month for which figures were available.
