Delta Air Lines, which recently began flying three times daily between Sea-Tac and Los Angeles International Airport, is increasing the frequency of its flights next fall.
The Atlanta-based airline will fly five times daily between the two cities using 90-passenger regional jets operated by Skywest. The route is one of Sea-Tac-based Alaska Airlines’ most highly patronized routes.
Alaska flies 12 times daily between Sea-Tac and LAX using larger Boeing 737 jets. Alaska has 55 percent of the market share on the route. Delta code-shares with Alaska on Alaska’s flights from LA.
Two other airlines already compete for passengers to LA, Virgin America, which flies full-sized Airbus A320s on the route three times daily and United Airlines, which uses regional jets, also flown by Skywest on its behalf, for the trip.
Delta has increased its presence at Sea-Tac in recent years, making the airport a West Coast hub for international services. Delta flies from Sea-Tac to Beijing, Osaka and to Tokyo’s Narita and Haneda airports in Asia. It has applied for permission to fly between Sea-Tac and Shanghai. The airline also connects Sea-Tac with the European cities of Amsterdam and Paris nonstop. Delta has said it plans to add London to its route map from Seattle.
