Unemployment rate in Pierce and Thurston counties down in January, state says

The unemployment rate in Pierce County fell to 9.4 percent in January, down from 9.7 percent in January 2012 and well below the 10.7 percent recorded in January 2011, the state Employment Security Department reported Tuesday.

On a percentage basis, the unemployment rate in the county fell 3.1 percent in January from the year before.

Fully 268,700 workers were employed in January in Pierce County,the department reported. This is up from 262,300 people employed in January last year.

Thurston County likewise showed a decline in the unemployment rate, with January’s 8.4 percent down from 8.5 percent a year before. With 97,500 workers employed last month, the number of persons employed rose by 1,100 workers from the 96,400 noted in January 2012.
