The federal Department of Transportation has given final approval of new service between Sea-Tac Airport and Tokyo’s close-in Haneda Airport. The new service begins June 1.
The Sea-Tac route replaces a former route between Delta’s hub in Detroit and Haneda, the more convenient of Tokyo’s two airports.
The Japanese only recently have opened up Haneda to long international flights allowing a limited number of such flights from each foreign nation.
Other airlines had asked the DOT to strip Delta of the unsuccessful Detroit-Haneda authority and award them instead the landing and takeoff slots at the Japanese airport.
Today’s announcement makes final a preliminary decision the DOT had made several months ago.
The new service will complement three other daily flights between Sea-Tac and Tokyo. All of those fly into Narita Airport. Delta operates one of those other Tokyo flights as does United Airlines and All Nippon Airways.
The Haneda flight is the latest expansion of Delta’s international flight schedule from Sea-Tac. The airline already connects Sea-Tac with Narita, Osaka and Beijing in Asia and Amsterdam and Paris in Europe. It will begin service to Shanghai from Sea-Tac June 17.
The Atlanta-based air carrier has also said it wants to begin serving London from Sea-Tac as soon as it has equipment available.
Delta has made Sea-Tac a West Coast hub for international flights. The airline has partnered with Seattle-based Alaska Airlines to provide service to and from Sea-Tac from numerous cities in the West.
Delta itself is beginning service from Los Angeles to Sea-Tac to help serve those international routes.
