Is the gas price holiday that South Sound residents enjoyed for the last two months finally ending?

Average gas prices are once again headed upward this week. The average price of a gallon of unleaded in the South Sound Thursday was $3.487, up more than a dime from the same time last week, according to the News Tribune’s Gas Deal Finder.

Nationwide, gas prices have risen even faster with an 11 cent increase over the same period.

Nonetheless, gas prices still remain below last year’s levels when refinery fires and concern over Middle East supplies pumped up prices to more than $4 a gallon by March on the West Coast.

Washington gas prices compared with other states remain in the middle of the pack.  Washington ranks 24th on the list of average gas prices nationwide, according to

At the top that list is Hawaii where a gallon of fuel costs $4.11. Next in line is California where a gallon of regular on average sells for $3.787.

The price of gas in two states remains below $3 a gallon. The average price in Wyoming is $2.846 while gas in neighboring Montana is $2.984 on average.

The lowest price fuel is in the Tacoma area is available at an unbranded station at Puyallup and Portland avenues near I-5.  That station, once an Arco, was selling gas Thursday for $3.29.

The lowest selling price for gas in the Olympia area is $3.21 at an Arco station at 7291 Martin Way E. In Federal Way, an Arco at Pacific Highway and South 320th Street was selling gas for $3.31 a gallon, the lowest in that city.
