Gas prices still below $3.40 a gallon in South Sound

South Sound gas prices are holding steady below $3.40 a gallon on average this week going counter to historical trends that show gas prices usually rising in Western Washington in January.

The News Tribune’s Gas Deal Finder reports the average price for a gallon of regular fuel was $3.37 a gallon in the Tacoma area Monday afternoon.  That’s 2.4 cents below the same day last week and 12.5 cents less per gallon than at this time last year.

The local price is 9.2 cents more than the national average.

The Tacoma area price leader remains the former Arco station at Puyallup and Portland avenues just off Interstate 5.  The station owner there, Hatem Shalabi, is changing $3.09 a gallon.  Shalabi recently reopended his station, once one of the highest volume stations in the state after his distributor won a court victory against Arco and its parent company BP. Arco had tried to stop that supplier from selling unbranded gas to Shalabi.

Shalabi and Arco, however, remain locked in a battle in federal court over whether Arco can require him to buy only Arco gas.  The station and nine others Shalabi owns were closed for more than a year after Arco cut off his gas supplies in a dispute over payments.

A gas war, raging for two months in Bonney Lake, continues unabated with three stations there selling gas for less than $3.25 a gallon.

In Thurston County, an Arco station on Martin Way is the lowest price in the county selling regular for $3.15 a gallon.
